Letterman: Wish I hadn't said that....

Of all the digs he's made at sex scandal-plagued politicians, David Letterman has to regret this one.

Letterman, the target of an enduring tabloid frenzy since last week, when he exposed a blackmailer trying to shake him down over affairs with women on his staff, has skewered notables from Bill Clinton to Mark Foley for their sexual indiscretions. But he really went after New York governor Eliot Spitzer, asking for his resignation before he actually gave it.

"I mean, can you imagine," said Letterman, "if this happened to me how fast they'd have my ass out of here?"

Dave wasn't having liaisons with prostitutes, but did it never cross his mind that he just might get called out one day for pursuing employees much lower down the chain of command? And CBS has shown no inclination to boot him. (Worth noting: CBS prez Les Moonves, is married to Julie Chen, a former staffer he had an affair with while he was married to someone else.)
