Letter of the day: 'To protect and serve' has meaning for police dogs, too

Shadow, the Minneapolis police dog who was stabbed several times while trying to apprehend his second suspect ("Hunt comes up empty," March 31), deserves a great deal of credit. Politicians make our laws, but it's the police, including the K-9 cops, who put their lives at risk to enforce those laws. Passing a law is one thing, but taking a "bite" out of crime while getting stabbed in the process is real public service. JERRY T. JOHNSON, BLOOMINGTON
