Letter of the day: Target Field has been a priceless marketing coup for city, county

September 30, 2010 at 12:03AM

Recalling the displeasure of many Hennepin County residents who felt they should have been given the opportunity to vote about funding for Target Field: You were right. You should have been given that opportunity. But you should be thankful that didn't occur. The appearance of the recent cover of Sports Illustrated is one of the great marketing coups I can ever recall, and to the benefit of Minneapolis and Hennepin County. It's virtually impossible to put a dollar value on it as a marketing tool. It's on magazine racks nationwide, coming on the heels of continuous rave reviews about the team, the stadium and all of the steps that led up to it. It's the equivalent of a national billboard, handed to you at no cost! I say "you" because I live in Dakota County, but like thousands of other non-Hennepin residents, I am a season-ticket holder who is bringing my money to spend in "your" restaurants and other venues. So even if you hate baseball and wanted nothing to do with a new ballpark, take a deep breath and acknowledge your good fortune. RAY MARTIN, ROSEMOUNT
