Letter of the Day (Sept. 29): Sexual abuse

A Sept. 26 letter stated that the Catholic Church should be doing more to prevent abuses. I would target that message to all of society and not just the church. Not that it lets the church off the hook, but when all of society takes a reactive approach to sex offenses, it's extremely unlikely that an organization — any organization — will change.

The warning signs for mental health problems are there, and conditions are treatable without people getting hurt. It's time we stop stigmatizing mental health and reacting to crimes and start trying to prevent them.
