The Vikings can't compete with other NFL teams playing in the Metrodome -- I get that. It's all about money -- I get that, too. Other owners have new stadiums, new luxury boxes and new contracts. They are making more money than Vikings owner Zygi Wilf. Why would Zygi keep a team in Minnesota when he can get a better deal in Los Angeles?
I love the Vikings. To me, it's worth it to pay a little more to keep them here for the simple reason that people in L.A. will pay it if we don't.
But why is a new stadium the only option? Former Vikings owner Red McCombs and Zygi have attempted to get a new stadium built for 10 years. Here's their problem. They haven't ever really explained why.
I'm not dumb. It's all about money. So let's talk money. I want to know why a new stadium generates more money than the Metrodome.
Parking? Concessions? Luxury boxes? Better contracts than with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission?
I like the Dome. Upgrade the bathrooms and concessions by building an addition, and it'd be like a shiny new penny. It would be much, much cheaper to upgrade than to build new.
If that's still not enough, then write Zygi a check for $200 million and lock in the Vikes for another 30 years. It'd be cheaper than financing a new stadium.
