I am a junior at the University of Minnesota, and I am one of the many students who received the advisory on Halloween costumes ("Halloween advisory at U: No offensive costumes," Oct. 22). Initially, I did not put much thought into it. Seems like common sense in this day and age, right? However, I am upset to hear how much backlash the letter has gotten from students. The U shouldn't have to tell us not to take advantage of stereotypes or offend others. Minneapolis is a diverse and welcoming community. Someone's culture should not turn into another's costume. I hope students take the U's letter to heart. I sincerely appreciated it and wish the U had gone even further in addressing costumes for women. Halloween is not a contest for who can get away with wearing the least amount of clothing. Not only should costumes be respectful of others, but they should show self-respect as well.

Pleased that the U issued advisory, but it should have included skimpy attire.
