I was relieved to read that the Anoka-Hennepin School District, while adding parental notification about certain book and film selections, has chosen to keep the young adult novel "Eleanor & Park" on its shelves despite a challenge by the Parents Action League and others ("Book challenge at Anoka High prompts policy change," March 27). The league seems to think that young adults at the high school level shouldn't be exposed to "coarse language" or human sexuality in literature. This smacks of an Orwellian dystopia where a work of literature isn't judged by its whole but rather by instances (227 in this case) of supposedly objectionable words or phrases. I hope the members of the league consider a more reasonable approach to judging educational literature before challenging its consumption by high school students in the future.
