I had a heart attack last Saturday — and every step along the way, a human being ignored technology and went with his or her gut, and I am grateful beyond words. So thanks to Hennepin County Medical Center EMTs Dan and Jason — who ignored the EKG that looked OK and insisted I go to the hospital when I balked; to Methodist Hospital cardiologist Dr. Daniel Satran — who ignored two more EKGs that looked OK and ordered an angiogram that showed the blocked artery, and to the wonderful nurses who used no technology at all — just hands and voices — to guide me out of a potential bleedout.
Medicine is still about people, thank God, who just happen to use machines.
