Letter of the Day (July 26): Money, power, pleasure

July 25, 2013 at 11:16PM
(The Minnesota Star Tribune)

In his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis had a message for Anthony Weiner, or so it seemed on Page A4 (July 25). The Star Tribune positioned a photo of the pope directly opposite the image of Mr. Weiner.

More to the point, the caption underneath included a message from the pope to Catholics, but it could be interpreted to apply more universally "to resist the 'ephemeral idols' of money, power and pleasure." The photo caption's last three words — money, power, pleasure — were a direct lead into the adjacent article on the unfolding character and personal problems of New York mayoral candidate Weiner.

Despite its continuing quest for objectivity, the Star Tribune is a moral force in the life of readers. Thank you!

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
