Letter of the day: It's not the cost of the ticket; it's the quality of the product

March 22, 2009 at 1:53PM

If the economy is to blame for the decline in attendance at local sporting events (Star Tribune, March 15), how do we explain sellout crowds for recent tours by musical acts Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, etc.?

Easy. Those acts show up and put on a phenomenal show night in and night out, well worth whatever the ticket price happens to be. And fans leave the show excited and completely satisfied, often still talking about the experience days later.

If Springsteen sounded lousy, moped around on stage and only played half the number of songs as usual, do you think fans would be willing to shell out big money to see him? Of course not.

So why are any of these professional sports teams shocked that fans don't want to spend big bucks to see their less-than-stellar product night after night?

Quit blaming the economy for circumstances so easily explained by common sense.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
