Letter of the day: In wake of a tragic crash, a display of true sportsmanship

April 29, 2010 at 11:43PM

The day after the terrible auto accident took the lives of four Cambridge-Isanti High School students ("Grief, mourning, and no answers," April 27), I witnessed true sportsmanship just before the start of the Cambridge-Isanti High School vs. Buffalo High School junior varsity softball game. Just before the visiting Buffalo Bison took the field for warmups, they walked over to the Cambridge-Isanti Jackets' bench and presented each player with a flower arrangement. It brought tears to my eyes as I walked up to the field. The compassion, consideration and class of this action demonstrated how today's young athletes can reach out to others and bring some comfort in a time of sorrow. As a teacher, I'm thankful that these students have had coaches and teachers who have modeled these positive character traits. As a parent, it is apparent that these young women have had parents, mentors, spiritual leaders and adults who have raised them with positive morals. STEVE HAMMERO, CAMBRIDGE

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
