SOME STARS SHINE BRIGHTLY

Lately, Hollywood stars, sports heroes and entertainment moguls have been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

The Charlie Sheens, Lindsay Lohans, Mel Gibsons and (sorry to say) Adrian Petersons only intensify the greed and self-destruction that is rampant in our society.

Then there is Sandra Bullock. Not only does she think of the Japanese tsunami victims by donating $1 million (Faces, March 18), but it's not the first time she's done it; she contributed in Haiti as well.

In a world of self-promotion, people like Bullock, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Oprah Winfrey, and locally the Andersen Foundation, the Cowles family, the Pohlads and many more, are thinking of others.

As the rich get richer and the middle class gets squeezed, and as world calamities top the news, it is so humbling to know that there are still quality human beings helping those who struggle in the daily grind.

These people are our country's real heroes.

Jim McGurk, Taylors Falls, Minn.
