Letter of the day: City's runners, walkers and drivers noticing salt shortage

December 30, 2008 at 4:05AM

Am I driving and running on the same streets and walk paths as I have over the last 22 years in Minneapolis? I know the city has less money for services and that salt is more expensive. In my neighborhood, I see no salt on side streets and walk paths. Wow! Those intersections and paths are really slippery. Several times I have nearly fallen. For more than two decades I have run outside during Minneapolis winters. This year is clearly the worst one for safety. Without salt, the roads and paths are really slippery and dangerous, dangerous, dangerous. I fear that someone will get really hurt due to no salt. STAN JOHNSON, MINNEAPOLIS

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
