I love living next door to the Minnesota State Fair. I love the fireworks, the people-watching and going as often as I can. But often people visiting the fair forget they are in a residential area.

Here are some requests. (They're all based on things that have happened. I kid you not.)

1. Read and obey the parking restrictions, including being at least 5 feet from a driveway. Parking enforcement is strict during the fair, and is done by the police, not the residents -- so don't vandalize the house. And don't use my driveway just because it's there. I'd like to get out.

2. Don't race down the alley to beat someone to a parking spot. In fact, don't use the alleys at all. Crime spikes during the fair, and unfamiliar cars are noted, along with license plate numbers. If a house gets broken into, you could get a call. Save yourself the trouble.

3. There are extra trash cans everywhere. Use them. I don't walk in your neighborhood and litter the lawns. Don't do it in mine.

4. I'm glad you enjoyed the fair. Once you leave, though, keep it down. We're trying to sleep. Continue your party at home if you'd like, not on my front steps.

5. Thank you for admiring my garden. It's really full this time of year. But please don't pick the flowers or vegetables!

And have fun!

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
