We recently visited the Interstate 35W Memorial in Minneapolis. A guide described the tragedy that occurred on Aug. 1, 2007. He had sharp memories of the event and was able to provide all of the facts on the bridge collapse and the loss of life. But memories disappear with the passage of time, which could diminish the impact of the bridge memorial for future generations. I suggest that a plaque describing the event be affixed to the I-35W memorial, making it meaningful to visitors for many years to come. We know how the 13 victims died, but how will future generations know? A plaque describing the collapse would honor the memories of the victims long after we're gone.
