25 years ago a buddy and I started a paint contracting business. I think back to those warm, sunny summer days outside painting, listening to the radio. It was during that summer that I first heard the dulcet tones of Rush Limbaugh guffawing about "feminazis" or "environmentalist wackos". I'd crack up when "dittoheads" would call in to fawn over their leader and Rush would pretend to care about what they said. Hilarious stuff. However, based on the pejoratives thrown my way in response to my last post on the Governor's "no tax pledge", there really has not been any right-wing comedic progress in 25 years.
Here is a sample of the terms tossed my way: liberal, socialist, whack job, circus monkey, and Nick Coleman. Let me first apologize to Nick Coleman that he should be so denigrated as to be compared to me. As for the rest of these terms - come on people are these the best the right has to offer? Has there really been no conservative comedic creativity in over 2 decades?
In the last 10 years there's been at least one T.V. channel (Comedy Central), two if you include MSNBC, which has risen primarily through left-leaning comedy. The comedy deficit has gotten so bad that a leftist, wacko, porno-lovin satirist may become our next U.S. Senator. How many funny guys did the Republicans run last year? OK there were some funny bits from John McCain, but Sarah Palin's overuse of "socialist" really took the pejorative fun out of the term. I would hate to think that "Real Americans" are so not funny.
So, while I'm very busy fighting for huge tax increases and working so I can give more of my money (voluntarily) to the government, I'm going to spend a minute or two every day trying to think of some new pejorative terms that could be used, in a funny way of course, against me. Perhaps, given my socialist nature, I might suggest we create a government department of "Comedic Equity" which would provide training for comedy impaired citizens. But then again, it might be better for all of us if we just stopped the name calling and envision world peace. Oops, there I go again.
Let's help with the pejorative, er comedy, deficit!
Everything seems to be running in deficit mode these days. I've been noticing that the political right seems to be running a large deficit on the comedy scale. Except for Rush Limbaugh, do they have anyone that is really funny?
