OSHKOSH, Wis. — An Oshkosh hospital is closing a unit that cares for recovering patients, as part of larger job cuts announced by its parent organization.
A Northwestern Media report (http://oshko.sh/17nUC04) says Mercy Medical Center will shut down its sub-acute care unit June 28. The unit serves patients who don't need intensive procedures, such as people recovering from surgery or strokes.
The hospital is owned by Ministry Health Care. Ministry announced plans last month to restructure its operations and cut 225 to 250 jobs system-wide.
Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys (hyooz') says the organization is working with other community organizations that provide short-term rehabilitation services to make sure Mercy patients receive proper care.
Ministry says the layoffs were prompted by a drop in the total number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.
