A large winter storm is taking hold of most of the South and southernmid-Atlantic states over the next two days. Heavy snow is expected to fall fromthe Texas Panhandle to the Atlantic Coast.A swath of snow accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches will extend from WestTexas eastward the whole way to the southern Chesapeake Bay. To the south ofthe heavy snowfall, there will be areas of ice from North Texas to NorthCarolina.

This snow is falling in some areas that are not used to handling such largeamounts. As a result, travel will be a mess Friday and Saturday across a largeportion of the South; not only from snow and ice, but heavy rain as well.

Interstate 40 will be particularly hard hit with snowy travel from Amarillo,Texas to Raleigh, N.C. at one time or another.
