Looking at the graphic above, it is easily to understand why flash flooding isa serious concern across the South during the next 48 hours. The heavy rainfalltotals will be produced by a storm that will funnel a tremendous amount ofmoisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico.Through tonight, the storm will unleash 2 to 4 inches of rain across thecentral Gulf Coast states. Locally higher amounts are certainly not out of thequestion.
Residents and visitors should prepare for flash flooding to quickly ensue.
Places in low-lying and urban areas, as well as along small streams, will bethe first to flood. Officials may be forced to close roads that becomeinundated with the flood waters.
In addition to the flood threat, the places where the heaviest rain will fallinto tonight will be targeted by severe thunderstorms.
The heavy rain and flood threat will shift northeastward on Wednesday,drenching the southern Appalachians. This also includes Atlanta, Charlotte andAugusta, Ga.
