Late Weekend Flood Threat in the East

January 23, 2010 at 1:25PM

The storm that will bring snow and ice to the northern Plains this weekend willproduce heavy, flooding rainfall in the eastern United States on Sunday intoMonday.A combination of heavy rain and mild temperatures will also cause rapidsnowmelt over the interior Northeast. This will greatly increase runoff, andcould lead to flash flooding.

The increased runoff of water into ice-covered rivers could also cause icejams. Ice jams along rivers cause water levels to rise quickly, leading toflooding close to river banks.

In general, this storm should produce anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of rain. Muchcolder weather will follow by midweek.
