Whatever was in the water at Lake Harriet's Southeast Beach has gone somewhere else. The beach reopened this stormy Thursday at noon after water samples showed the high bacteria levels had subsided to well within the safety guidelines.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board blamed recent heavy rains and hot weather for boosting the levels of E. coli bacteria to unsafe levels. The beach was closed Tuesday after the levels of E. coli clocked in at a whopping 2,420 - nearly double the safety limit. When retested Wednesday, it dropped to a reassuring 4.
