Cool marine air inhabits the immediate coastline of California most of June,July and August. Here's why. The interior is very hot which creates a relativezone of low pressure. In contrast, cooler air over the ocean causes higherpressure. This pressure configuration pushes cool marine air up against thecoastline. Because the flow is weak, the cooler air rarely gets very far inlandand the interior of Southern California sizzles. The temperature differences created by this marine effect are huge. In LosAngeles, for instance, it might be 70 degrees when at the same time PalmSprings is 110! Story by AccuWeather.com senior Meteorologist John Kocet.
