Yes, the wind will howl later tonight and Friday...A rapidly intensifying storm will produce a full gale from the New Hampshirecoast to Nova Scotia late tonight and Friday, and equally strong winds will hitthe entire area from upstate New York to Virginia.

And speaking of "When the Wind Blows," that is part of the classic nurseryrhyme that parents used to (and probably still do) recite to their kids. Thinkabout the words, though... "When the wind blows the cradle will rock... Whenthe bough breaks the cradle will fall... And down will come baby, cradle andall." What a horror story that is! Maybe save that one for Halloween.

Speaking of falling, there are going to be zillions of leaves coming downbefore their time because of this storm. I guess one could say that the flamingfall foliage is going to be extinguished to some degree.

The high winds that this storm, or for that matter any strong storm, producesare the product of two atmospheric conditions:First and foremost, there must be a large pressure gradient. This is what putsthe air into motion, and the larger the difference in pressure along a finitedistance, the stronger the wind will be.

There is also the matter of vertical coupling. This describes what occurs whenenergy from the jet stream mixes down to the lowest part of the atmosphere.

This is what gives the surface winds that extra zest. An additional point tomake is that in order for vertical transfer to be effective, the jet streammust be aligned with the surface flow.

Both a large pressure gradient and strong jet stream will be over themid-Atlantic region Friday, and thus the strong winds.
