A sprawling area of low pressure in the western Caribbean is destined to becomeTropical Storm Nicole by Wednesday. The storm is destined to become a classicEast Coast storm producing moderate to heavy rainfall from Florida to NewEngland. Once again, flooding will be a top news story. It is kind of ironic, though, that that the area getting flooded now wasstricken by drought all month.

The band of heaviest rain is likely to set up from eastern and perhaps centralNorth Carolina right up the piedmont region to the central Hudson Valley of NewYork. In this zone, there will easily be 2 to 3 inches of rain, and up to 6inches cannot be ruled out.

The storm may never mature into a hurricane; however, 50- to 60-mph winds andlarge waves could lash at the Carolina coast Wednesday night.

Regardless whether or not the storm achieves hurricane status, it will dump alot of rain and cause a bunch of flooding woes from the Carolinas northward.
