BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Minnesota Congressman John Kline is urging President Barack Obama to get engaged so Washington can stop student loan rates from doubling on July 1.
In the GOP response to Obama's weekly address, the Minnesota Republican credited Obama for offering a plan for long-term student loan reform by tying interest rates to the market instead of fixing them.
But Kline says Senate Democrats have blocked the president's plan and refuse to consider a House-passed plan. He says time is running out.
Senate Democrats have criticized both plans, saying student loans have become a source of profit for the government, and shouldn't be.
Kline is chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee. He is a six-term congressman and lives in Burnsville.
