• FDA analysis of 200 samples found average levels of 3.5 to 6.7 micrograms of arsenic per serving.

• Consumer Reports, with 223 samples, found levels up to 8.7 micrograms. It cited New Jersey's strict drinking water standard -- a maximum of 5 micrograms in a liter of water -- as comparison.

The industry group USA Rice Federation said it is unaware of any arsenic-related illnesses linked to eating U.S. rice.

Symptoms: Prolonged arsenic exposure has been linked to cancer, diabetes and liver diseases. Symptoms of acute poisoning vary but can include excessive sweating, abdominal pain, shock, problems swallowing and vomiting. Treatment involves removal of arsenic by dialysis or chelating agents.
