A 17-year-old boy from Nowthen died Friday evening when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Andover, authorities said.

The crash happened at 6:20 p.m. in the 700 block of 141st Avenue NW., Anoka County Sheriff's Cmdr. Paul Sommer said in a news release.

Officers were called to the scene on a report of a juvenile male down in the street. The teen had been with friends at a nearby home and had just left when his friends heard "a dull collision sound followed by screeching tires," Sommer said. They ran outside and found their fatally injured friend, but were not in time to see the vehicle.

The victim died at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to call 763-427-1212.
