Jurors convicted a man from Savage who was high when he drove his pickup truck into a car and killed the other motorist in Bloomington.

Christopher M. Wendt, 34, was found guilty in Hennepin County District Court last week of criminal vehicular homicide after a rear-end crash in July 2017 that killed Travis J. Krautkremer, 28, of Bloomington.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 20. The County Attorney's Office said it expects Wendt to receive a 48-month term. He will serve roughly the first two-thirds of his sentence in prison and the balance on supervised release.

Wendt had amphetamines and methamphetamine in his system when he slammed into Krautkremer's car while the two were driving on Hwy. 169 near Interstate 494, according to the criminal charges.

A witness said Krautkremer was on the far right side of the road, either stopped or driving slowly, when Wendt's pickup ran over the car and flipped, the charges said. Krautkremer died at the scene.

Officers located Wendt on the grass next to the road and said he appeared to be sleeping. He told officers he was changing lanes and when he looked forward, he realized he was drifting onto the shoulder and did not see Krautkremer's car in time.

Wendt failed a field sobriety test but passed a breath test. A blood sample taken later from him tested positive for amphetamines and meth, the charges read.
