June 5, 2002: Minneapolis man died struggling over gun, police say

March 14, 2013 at 5:48PM

A struggle over a gun ended in the death of an 18-year-old Minneapolis man, according to charges filed Tuesday.

Ervin Smith Jr. was shot after he pulled a gun on Antonio B.
Woodard, 20, during an argument at a triplex in the 1800 block of 25th Av. N. in Minneapolis about 2:15 a.m. Monday, the charges said.

Woodard then removed a gun from a cabinet, but another man in the room grabbed Woodard's hand and a shot was fired into the ceiling, the charges said. Nobody was hit by that shot, but Woodard and Smith grabbed each other.

In their struggle, Woodard shot Smith once in the chest, the complaint said. Woodard turned himself in to police Monday. The men were longtime acquaintances, police said.

Woodard was charged with second-degree murder. He also was charged with being a felon with a firearm. He is being held in the Hennepin County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
