Journeyman actor Bill Smitrovich has played some strong characters, including the father of a Down syndrome child in "Life Goes On," a detective in "Crime Story" and the vice president in NBC's Monday-night serial, "The Event." But none of those challenges compare to the real-life heroics of Gregory Boyle, a pastor who provided support and job opportunities to Los Angeles gang members. Smitrovich highly recommends Boyle's account, "Tattoos on the Heart."

"Excellent book. He started Homeboy Industries, which, at one time, saved a lot of kids' lives. He gets into how he changed these kids and in such a beautiful way. The kids trusted him, he gave them hope and a job and he gave them meaning in their lives. He could look past the tattoos, piercings and gang affiliations."
