AMMAN, JORDAN - Angelina Jolie traveled to Jordan on Monday to visit Syrians who fled the civil war in their country. The Hollywood star planned to visit Jordan's first tent city for Syrian refugees on Tuesday. She will be accompanied by U.N. refugee chief Antonio Guterres and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh to the Zatari camp, which hosts about 27,000 Syrians displaced by the 18-month conflict.

Jordan has sheltered more than 185,000 Syrian refugees -- the largest number in the region.

In April, the U.N. refugee agency promoted Jolie from serving as its goodwill ambassador to special envoy. She has contributed $5 million to U.N. efforts aiding refugees worldwide. In June, she donated $100,000 to the United Nations to assist Syrian refugees.

The U.N. agency "believes even one person forced to flee is too many. And it's true," Jolie said in a statement. "Every individual refugee matters. Each has their own story. Each has suffered and survived more than I could ever bear. And yet, they rise up to live another day."

In June 2111, she visited Syrian refugees in the Altinozu refugee camp in Turkey, near the Syrian border.
