The Vikings reportedly released seven players Friday, meaning they have 19 more cuts to make before Saturday's 5 p.m. deadline.
The team only has to get down to 54 players because defensive tackle Kevin Williams won't count against the active roster during the first two weeks of the season. The NFL suspended Williams for two games and fined him an additional two game checks for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Former Gophers defensive end Stylez G. White announced his release on Twitter.
White tweeted: "Just got the news I have been released. The crazy part. I felt like I lost. Great organization MN Vikings. Thx for support."
White still has some pass-rushing skills, but it didn't make sense keeping a 32-year-old when there were so many young pass rushers on the roster.
Meanwhile, agent Angelo Wright, who represented receiver Jaymar Johnson until recently, wasn't surprised that Johnson had been told he was cut. A sixth-round draft pick in 2008, Johnson started training camp with high expectations but faded quickly as a receiver and punt returner.
Also released Friday, according to 1500ESPN.com, were defensive end David Akinniyi, guard Byron Isom, cornerback Devon Torrence, safety Ryan Hill and running back Tristan Davis. Akinniyi, Isom, Torrence and Hill are undrafted rookies. Davis, an undrafted rookie in 2009, spent the past two seasons on the practice squads for the Lions and Dolphins.
Torrence played well early in camp and had a real shot to make the team. A quadriceps injury derailed his chances, although he is a candidate to be brought back to the practice squad.
