January Thaw Coming

January 8, 2010 at 8:25PM

Would all you folks that live in the Midwest enjoy a January thaw right aboutnow? It's been pretty nippy lately, hasn't it?hovered at 21 degrees much of the afternoon, and Minneapolis stayed in thesingle digits all day. There is no help coming right away, I'm afraid. The harsh cold will persistthrough Saturday. Sunday will start to feel a bit better, though, as thecoldest air starts to recede.

Next week, a full-fledged January thaw will encompass all of the central andnorthern Plains and Midwest with temperatures climbing as much as 50 degreeshigher than they are right now.

How long will the thaw last? It's hard to say. Usually these things run theircourse over a few days, then it's back to the rigors of winter.
