January Lull Won't Last

January 14, 2010 at 8:25PM

All things considered, the weather will remain relatively tame across much ofthe United States Friday. There will be a big storm in the western Gulf ofMexico, but from California across the nation's heartland to the EasternSeaboard, not much will be going on. Plus, it will be relatively mild for thistime of year. These lulls occasionally happen during the winter. It's almost like theatmosphere just totally expends itself for a while, then it needs time torecoup.

Things will get into gear again as that storm comes out of the Gulf of Mexicoand heads up the Eastern Seaboard. Snow from the storm will be limited to thehigher elevations of the Appalachian region; however, this will be a big rainevent from Georgia to New Jersey.

Next thing to happen will be a dramatic southward shift of the Pacific Stormtrack. This will cause major storms to come crashing into California all ofnext week, producing excessive rainfall, flooding and mudslides. These stormswill have some impact on the weather through the Central and Eastern parts ofthe country as well.
