Jan. 18, 1921: 'Ain't' worth nothin' at North High

Ain't for is not, didn't do nothing for didn't do anything, and all the other nemeses of the high school pupils, will be washed from the vocabularies this week.

'Ain't' Is Wiped From
North High Vocabulary
In 'Good English Week'

Ain't just isn't at North high school this week. Ain't for is not, didn't do nothing for didn't do anything, and all the other nemeses of the high school pupils, will be washed from the vocabularies this week. Officially it's called "Good English Week" at North high, but it is rumored that a freshman told a junior, who told a sophomore, who heard it from a senior, that W.W. Hobbs, principal of the school, has gone on the warpath against slang. "Good English" weeks have been held in other schools within the last several weeks.

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
