An apartment fire on the Iron Range left one person dead and many others out of their homes, authorities said.

The blaze broke out before dawn Saturday at an apartment building in the 8500 block of Raintree Drive in Mountain Iron, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said.

The person found dead at the scene was identified as ShaVondria S. Owens, 25, who lived in the third-floor apartment, where a witness said there was smoke, the Sheriff's Office added.

Residents in 24 apartments were being assisted by the Red Cross, authorities said. No other casualties were reported.

"The investigation has not found anything suspicious" about the fire's origin, the Sheriff's Office added.

Owens leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter, according to the GoFundMe fundraising Web page (www.gofundme.com/gxe7kfh8) that was set up to help the family with expenses related to the fire.

Kayla Moore, a friend who started the fundraising page, said Monday that Owens was working in telemarketing at the time of her death.

"The last time I spoke to her was around 9:45 p.m.," Moore said. "We were just leaving the Mesabi Range College basketball game."

Owens was born in St. Paul and lived in Duluth before moving to the Iron Range, Moore said.

"She and her family moved up here to better their lifestyle and move away from troubled areas," Moore said.
