Nearly two years after its world premiere at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Tony Kushner's newest play, "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures" is playing in New York.

The family drama had its first preview at the Public Theater Wednesday, March 23. It opens May 5 and is scheduled to run through June 12.

Of the dozen cast members in the New York production, four actors are carrying over from their performances in Minneapolis. They are Michael Cristofer as the family patriarch, Gus, Stephen Spinella as Pill, Michael Esper as Eli and Linda Emond as Empty. Kathleeen Chalfant (Bennie, below), a principal character in the Minneapolis production, is not appearing in New York. Michael Greif directed in both cities.

Production photos at the website broadwayworld.com indicate that the set at the Public, a rambling living room in a well-worn Brooklyn brownstone, is similar to the one at the Guthrie.

The play, which ran 3-and-a-half hours at the Guthrie, is said to have undergone significant revision before its New York opening.

The New York show is presented by the Public and Signature Theatre, in association with the Guthrie. Signature is devoting its entire season to Kushner plays, including his landmark "Angels in America."
