An Anoka County jail inmate died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids after being found hanging from a bedsheet Thursday at the county jail, according to sheriff's officials.

Steven James Carroll, 28, of Anoka, was found hanging by a sheet from a metal seam in the frame of his cell window Thursday afternoon, according to Cmdr. Paul Sommer. The area was in lockdown at the time, and jail personnel had been checking on inmates every 15 minutes. Carroll had been checked on and "was fine" at 2:30 p.m., but minutes later was found hanging from the sheet, Sommer said.

Deputies administered first aid and Carroll was taken by ambulance to Mercy, where he died just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Carroll, who had been in custody since Tuesday, had been charged with felony domestic assault, burglary, disorderly conduct and also was the subject of an arrest warrant from Florida, Sommer said.

He left a suicide note in his pocket, Sommer said. His death remains under investigation.
