An illegal stimuant most commonly used in weight loss, muscle building and performance enhancement supplements can cause serious health problems, including death, according to an alert by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA has receved 86 reports of illness and death associated with consumption of supplements containing the ingredient, dimethylamylamine (DMAA), which is also known as methylhexanamine or geranium extract. Reported adverse effects include heart attack, shortness of breath, tightening of the chest, psychiatric disorders and death.

DMAA constricts blood vessels and is particular dangerous when combined with caffeine, the FDA warned.

The FDA told 11 companies to stop using DMAA in its products. Most have complied, but one company, USPlabs did not immediately agree to stop including DMAA in its products, two of which go by the brand names Jack3D and Oxy Elite Pro.
