IndyCar modifies restart, penalty review procedures

August 2, 2013 at 10:55PM

LEXINGTON, Ohio — IndyCar has updated its rulebook following a series of late-race issues last month in Toronto. The new rules will go into effect this weekend at the Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

Under the new guidelines, when there is a restart with 15 or fewer laps remaining all lapped cars will move to the back of the field.

Also, if a penalty is called during the race but cannot be served due to circumstances, the race director will have the right to review the penalty after the race's conclusion. The race results will be considered provisional until the review is completed.

The policies regarding tire usage were also modified. Under the new policy, if a tire is damaged during the race, the two-lap requirement for that type of tire will be fulfilled.
