Beth Gilleland, Minneapolis
Beth's father, Wayne "Lefty" Gilleland, who early in his career coached a high school team in Wanamingo, Minn. The year was 1952. Austin beat Wanamingo in the region finals. Dad is kissing the star player, Roger Hostager, who went on to play for four years at St. Olaf.

In 1952, Wayne “Lefty” Gilleland coached a high school team in Wanamingo, Minn. Austin beat Wanamingo in the region final, but Lefty gave star player Roger Hostager a big smooch anyway. (Hostager went on to play for four years at St. Olaf in Northfield.) Thanks to Beth Gilleland of Minneapolis for sending in the photos of her dad. Mary Beth Sartor Obermeyer of Minneapolis was the cheerleading mascot for the North Iowa-South Minnesota Cheerleading Clinic at age 4 —more than 70 years ago. “Such great memories,” she says. Basketball season never really ends. State tournaments have wrapped up (although there's that one Final tournament coming to Minneapolis next weekend), but we celebrate the season — and the sport — any chance we get. Whether it's looking through photos from years gone by, talking about that game-winning shot or playing in driveway, for many Minnesotans, basketball isn't a season, it's a way of life.

Mary Beth Sartor Obermeyer, Minneapolis
Over 70 years ago, I was the cheerleading mascot at the North Iowa-South Minnesota Cheerleading Clinic. At age 4, cheering, and on the floor of the clinic, leading a cheer.

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
