Berlin, Como Zoo's visiting polar bear, is back to bossing around the boys after a grave health scare.
After spending recent weeks in separate quarters privately recuperating from major surgery at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, Berlin was cleared to go back on exhibit last week by her veterinarian and rejoin the zoo's twin male bears, Buzz and Neil, whom she keeps in line.
Berlin moved to Como last summer after flooding at her home zoo in Duluth. Last month, after zookeepers found her lethargic and unresponsive, surgeons removed a necrotic mass that had caused internal bleeding.
Since then she's been steadily getting back to her old habits and eating normally.
"Berlin has a lot of fans in Minnesota, especially since her adventures this summer. We are thrilled with the progress she is making in her recovery and excited to celebrate her 23rd birthday next month," said Michelle Furrer, director of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
