WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT STURGEON

• Anglers on Minnesota-Canada border waters can keep one sturgeon per season. Since 2006, anglers have had to buy a $5 tag that allows them to keep one fish between 45 and 50 inches or over 75 inches. The current state record is a 94-pound, 4-ounce fish caught in the Kettle River.

• The DNR sold 2,483 tags last year; 240 sturgeon were registered. The regular season on the Minnesota-Canada border is open April 24-May 7 and July 1-Sept. 30. The catch-and-release-only season is open May 8-15 and Oct. 1-April 23, 2011.

• Sturgeon fishing also is allowed on the St. Croix River.
