Jay Petervary of Idaho won the Arrowhead 135 race, crossing the finish line on bicycle at 3:11 a.m. Tuesday after competing for 20 hours, 11 minutes. The Northern Minnesota endurance race, which covers 135 miles from International Falls to Tower, has options for either running, skiing or cycling.
Participants have been competing in brutally cold temperatures — windchills at the start at 7 a.m. Monday were around minus-50 degrees. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, 14 competitors, all of them on bicycle, had finished the race. Of the 142 who started the race, 92 had dropped out.

Another award for U goalie
Gophers goalie Adam Wilcox, the MVP of the North Star College Cup, was named the Big Ten's third star of the week in men's hockey.
Wilcox had a career-high 38 saves both nights as Minnesota beat St. Cloud State 4-1 and tied Minnesota Duluth 4-4 before winning a shootout in which Wilcox stopped two shooters.

• The Gophers' Sam Brancale, a 125-pound redshirt freshman from Eden Prairie, was named the Big Ten wrestler of the week. He pinned third-ranked Thomas Gilman of Iowa on Saturday to lead the Gophers to a 19-15 dual meet victory over the Hawkeyes in Iowa City.
• The St. Paul Saints re-signed infielder Joey Becker and added catcher/infielder Jake Taylor. Becker primarily played third base last season and hit .259 with 50 runs scored and 40 RBI. Taylor, obtained in a trade with Sioux Falls on Oct. 31, signed Tuesday. He hit .286 for the Canaries last season with five homers and 28 RBI. The Saints open their season May 15.
