ID is pending on body pulled from Mississippi in St. Paul

A body discovered by a barge worker was pulled from the Mississippi River on Tuesday morning in downtown St. Paul.

Fire personnel recovered the body near the Robert Street bridge, said police spokesman Pete Crum.

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office will try to determine the cause and manner of death. An identity was not released Tuesday.

Authorities would not say whether it was a 22-year-old Minneapolis man who apparently was swept away shortly before midnight Saturday.

Sengleng A. Xiong, also known by his middle name, Alex, was apparently swimming with friends off Raspberry Island in St. Paul when he disappeared.

Dozens of Xiong's friends and relatives were holding a vigil on the island but decamped Tuesday.
