For weeks ICE has focused enforcement in the Twin Cities as part of ‘Operation Metro Surge.’

An anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) march in the heart of south Minneapolis’ immigrant business corridor drew thousands of people Saturday.

The march began at about 11:30 a.m. at East Lake Street and Bloomington Avenue, near the Latino marketplace Mercado Central, and ended at about 1 p.m. at Lake and Pillsbury Avenue, near the Somali shopping center Karmel Mall.

Both intersections have seen clashes between ICE agents and protesters as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) turned its eye on the Twin Cities in the past month.

  • Called “Operation Metro Surge,” ICE agents have stepped up their presence in Minneapolis, St. Paul and several nearby suburbs.
    • DHS says it has resulted in more than 670 arrests so far, although the Minnesota Star Tribune has been unable to verify that number. The agency has not released a list of those detained.
