By now, most of us have probably seen at least one of the viral videos or photographs out there of a Minnesotan — a U.S. citizen, or someone who is here legally — being detained by ICE or other federal agents.

And we’ve heard a handful of stories from protesters and observers who have been detained.

But we know there are more stories out there that we’ve only heard of secondhand or thirdhand, or in a post on social media we can no longer find. As we grapple with the short-term and long-term ramifications of the ICE surge in Minnesota, we need to hear more of these accounts to truly understand the full impact of what has happened and is happening here in Minnesota.

So we’re asking you to share your story: Have you been stopped or detained by federal agents in Minnesota in the past couple of months? Where were you, why were you were stopped and what was the interaction like with the agents?

How do you feel about what happened to you and how has it impacted you? Had you already been carrying your passport or other documentation with you, or have you started doing so since then?

We’d like to hear stories from both those who were stopped because their citizenship or legal status was questioned as well as from observers and protesters.

We’re interested in hearing the full range of experiences — from people who were questioned for a few minutes in a parking lot to those who were detained for a few hours, or longer, before being released. Or if this happened to a member of your family — a parent, a child, an aunt — that you witnessed or heard about firsthand, we also invite you to share that experience.

We hope to publish these accounts in the opinion pages of the Minnesota Star Tribune and through social media in the coming days and weeks.

We offer you a few ways to share your stories with us:

  • Write it up in a 200-400 word piece that could run as a letter to the editor or a short commentary.
    • Record a short vertical video (1-2 minutes) of yourself sharing your experience.
      • Or send me your contact information — name, email, phone number — so we can reach out to interview you.

We will accept these submissions on a rolling basis, but are setting an initial deadline of Friday, Feb. 6. Send your account to us at opinion@startribune.com. If you have photos or a video of your interaction with federal agents, we encourage you to share those with us as well.

Please help us spread the word about this effort around the community through your networks. Thanks in advance for your help.
