A former Iowa state representative was killed Wednesday in a three-vehicle crash on an icy southern Minnesota freeway.

Barbara Ann Finch, 56, of Ames, Iowa, was headed north on Interstate 35 when the driver of a southbound pickup truck lost control, slid into the median and then into oncoming traffic in Freeborn County, about 11 miles north of the Minnesota-Iowa border, according to the State Patrol. The pickup truck collided with Finch's van, which spun out of control and was hit by a northbound semitrailer truck.

Finch was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened at 8:40 a.m. Her daughter, Erin Finch, 25, was a passenger in the van and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.

The pickup truck driver, identified by the patrol as Karl Grubbs, 47, and his passenger, Donna Grubbs, 63, both of Rimrock, Ariz., were taken to Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi, Robert Brandt, 64, of Litchfield, Minn., was not injured.

Barbara Finch served one term as a Republican state representative in 2001 and 2002, said Mark Brandsgard, chief clerk for the Iowa House of Representatives.
