Hundreds protest ICC delay for ex-Ivory Coast president, calling for more evidence

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — About 300 people have protested over a delay on whether former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo will be put on trial at the International Criminal Court.

Gbagbo has been charged with four counts of crimes against humanity in connection with Ivory Coast's 2010-11 postelection violence.

The unrest erupted after Gbagbo refused to cede defeat despite losing the November 2010 election to current President Alassane Ouattara.

Judges ruled on June 3 that prosecutors had not provided sufficient evidence to confirm the charges. Prosecutors now have until Nov. 15 to give more evidence.

Protest organizer Alphonse Soro said Monday he wanted to show "indignation and incomprehension," adding there was "no sustainable peace possible without a trial."
