GREEN BAY, Wis. — Hundreds of people, including firefighters in full gear, climbed the equivalent of 110 stories at Lambeau Field.
The five laps on a section of stairs at the stadium were in honor of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center buildings.
And estimated 700 participants, who paid $25 each, carried an identification badge with the name and photo of a fallen firefighter during their climb Sunday. Press-Gazette Media (http://gbpg.net/15drqU3 ) says the event was part of Pierce Manufacturing's 100th anniversary celebration. The Menasha company builds firefighting vehicles.
Howard firefighter Derrick Hoppe knew the climb with 30 pounds of gear would be a challenge on a hot day. But, Hoppe says it's nowhere near the challenge the New York firefighters faced that day. The funds benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
